Such an acid behavior of Al2O3 is also shown in FT-IR spectra of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-5mass% MgO-5mass% FeO slags in Fig.

The mechanism of the reaction between solid carbon and iron oxide present in the slag occurs via intermediate gas. CO gas produced in the initial stages of reaction between carbon and slag gets transported through the gas phase and reacts with FeO in slag to produce CO2 and metallic iron. This CO2 gets ferried back to carbon, where gasification of CO2 to CO takes place via the Boudouard reaction. The carbon available in the carbonaceous substrate starts to react with the FeO from the slag. CO and CO2 gases are formed and the slag droplet is inflated.
