The same variation between qī and qí also occurs before ge ‘item’, with a neutral tone: qī ge xiáo ǎirér ~ qí ge xiáo ǎirér ‘the Seven Dwarfs’.

When neutral tones occur between two third tones, the same pattern can still be applied in rapid speech: wǒmen ‘we’, zǒu ‘go away’ > wómen zǒu ‘we go away’; yǒu ‘be there’ yi ‘a’, ge ‘item’, hǎo de ‘good one’ > yóu yi ge hǎo de ‘there is a good one’. With intervening neutral tones, application of the pattern is optional: we fnd both wǒmen zǒu and wómen zǒu for ‘we go away’. g. wǒmen zǒu ~ wǒm zǒu ~ wómen zǒu ~ wóm zǒu ~ m zǒu ‘we go away’ (compare Chao 1968: 623-633); yǒu yi ge hǎo de ~ yóu yi ge hǎo de ~ yǒu ge hǎo de ~ yóu ge hǎo de ‘there is a good one’.
